The family and relatives of Jason will be in attendance during the time frames below and so that everyone can attend and be part of his wake we have the following times set aside for the following organisations that Jason was a part of:

Sunday 23rd January

From 1.30pm – 3.30pm Friends of Jason’s from Port Macquarie Primary School, Port Macquarie High School and Port Macquarie Reginal High School.

There will be a short break while the hall is vacated.

From 4pm – 6pm Friends of Jason’s from NSW Police, Port Macquarie Malibu Board riders club, and Tacking Point Surf Club.

Please be advised that you will be required to QR code in, show proof of double vaccination and please wear a mask on entry into the club and when walking around the interior of the clubhouse, when ordering drinks and using the toilets.

We realise it is a difficult time for the family and Jason’s friends and we are trying to cater for everyone in these Covid times, so please adhere to the following times, we do not want to turn away anyone if we have reached our maximum limit, in the allotted time slots.

Although Jason wasn’t a current member of our Club, he was, and will always be a part of our Club. Jason and his late brother Ashley rose through the ranks o f Tacking Point Nippers to be outstanding Clubmen and many of our older members will remember those days, with fond memories.

Jason was an extreme waterman who was everything a lifesaver could be. He was a very competent Patrol Captain, excellent competitor excelling on the board and ski, he was an instructor of numerous courses and he was arguably one of the best IRB drivers in the Branch. The best example of this is when Jason received the Australian Bravery Medal for his heroic actions effecting a mass rescue on the bar at the mouth of the Hastings River in May, 1999.

Sea Rescue had launched their vessel in huge seas to go to the assistance of a stricken vessel out to sea off the coast of Port Macquarie. Their launch overturned on the bar and all on board were flung into the sea. Jason who was a Police Officer stationed at Port Macquarie, commandeered a sea rescue irb (rib) and effected the rescue of all on board the launch. For those who witnessed this astonishing rescue they will never forget Jason’s quick actions on that day and he thoroughly deserved this award.

To Debbie his wife, his daughters Taylor and Danielle and son Josh, mother Margo; we extend our sincere condolences at this very sad time.

May he rest in peace.

Bronte delivered a short speech for the occasion and did our Club very proud!

‘Bingo’ as he was affectionately known to many, was a founding member of our Club. He served three x 3 year terms as President of the Club from 1981-1984, 1990-1993 and 1999-2002. He was also the Club’s Chief instructor from 1978 until 1982 and also held various other positions within the Club.

He was honoured with Life Membership of the Club in 1990.

Bingo was instrumental in organising the building of the balcony and during this time he suffered a badly smashed ankle when part of the old balcony gave way. Although in much pain, he still organised the completion of the balcony.

Graham was a mentor to many long serving members of our club and his knowledge and insight into all matters of surf lifesaving was second to none. He was awarded Life Membership of the Mid North Coast Branch in 2002 for his dedication and involvement in training and assessing various courses.

Bingo was a larger than life character who was a popular figure around the club and our bar is named in his honour.

Even though Graham and Roz moved to the Sunshine Coast a few years ago he was always in contact to find out how the Club was going. He never lost his passion for our Club.

Graham was a keen aviator and was also a member for many years of the Port Macquarie Flying Club.

Bingo was also well respected in the Port Macquarie building industry and worked for many years with Buckton Glass.

To Roz his wife, his son Mark, Karen his daughter and their extended family as well as his many dear friends outside of surf lifesaving, our thoughts and prayers are with them at this very sad time.

Nippers are jumping for joy at Tacking Point and Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Clubs with two donations from the Westport Club.

Club representatives were presented with $1,200 from fundraising efforts over Christmas and new year at the Port Central Shopping Centre, as well as a fireworks display on January 11.

Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club president Bill Amy said the sponsorship funds would go towards a new rescue board.

“We continually have to update our gear, techniques and equipment change to be the best surf life saving club we can be,” he said.

Westport Club community and sports manager Jenny Edmunds said staff were proud to be able to support local surf life saving clubs this summer.

“These donations will support the surf clubs with their purchase of a new surf ski for training purposes and a lifeguard rescue board,” she said.

“The Westport Club wishes to thank all those volunteers who work hard on our local beaches to keep us all safe in the water each and every day. This is just some small way that The Westport Club can support our local surf clubs to continue their vital work in the community”.

Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club president Mick Lang said the funds raised through Westport Club’s Community Grants Program were greatly appreciated.

“The funds are already going to a rescue board for patrols, we are always looking to update our rescue equipment for quicker response times,” he said.

Some of the hazards you might encounter while having fun at the beach include:

• Rips – strong offshore current caused by the tide pulling water away from the shore. They can sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea.
• Sandbars – a ridge of sand that is built by waves and can mean the water is shallower than expected when diving in.
• Marine Stingers – marine stingers are poisonous and potentially deadly sea creatures such as jellyfish and octopuses.
• Submerged objects – submerged objects such as trees, branches, rocks and more can pose a threat as they may not be seen from the surface.
• Shallow waters – diving head first into shallow waters can result in a concussion, long-term spinal damage or even death.
• The Sun – Sun exposure without the right protection can cause dehydration, sunburn, heat stroke, heat exhaustion and more.
• Other people.
• Surfcraft.

As you can see there are lots of potential dangers at your local beach, but we want it to be fun. So we thought we’d call in the experts to get the low-down on being safe at the beach. We asked our friends at Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club to help us out with some surf safety tips.

Tips for beach safety

• Always swim between the red and yellow flags. For your nearest patrolled beach, check the BeachSafe app or website.
• Read the safety signs for information about the beach and ask a Lifesaver or Lifeguard for safety information.
• Always swim with someone else so you can look out for each other, and always supervise children around the water.
• Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Be aware of what is happening around you so that you can see if a surf craft is headed in your direction.
• If you need help in the water, stay calm and attract attention by raising your arm. It is important not to panic.
• For information about patrol times, weather, and beach locations visit the Beachsafe Website or download the app.
• With a hot summer predicted remember to cover up, seek shade and always wear sunscreen when at the beach.

How to avoid getting caught in a rip

Rips or riptides are the number one hazard on Australian beaches. The best way to avoid a rip is to swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags.

How to survive a rip current

• Stay calm and consider your options.
• Raise an arm to seek help. Try to keep your arm straight, don’t wave it about.
• Try floating with the current, it may bring you back to shore.
• Swim parallel to the shore or towards breaking waves and use them to help you in.
• Reassess your situation. If what you’re doing isn’t working, try one of the other options until you’re rescued or return to shore.

Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club

Located at Lighthouse Beach in Port Macquarie, Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) provides lifesaving services, nipper activities, education and social functions for members, visitors and the wider community.

Tacking Point Surf LifeSaving Club (SLSC) was founded in 1974, largely due to the increasing popularity of Lighthouse Beach for swimming and other ocean activities. The late Alderman Norm Matesich played a pivotal role in establishing the club, with his family still actively involved to this day. When the club first opened, there were 30 members. Today, there are 467 members, with numbers continuing to grow year on year.

Tacking Point SLSC’s core purpose is to ensure public safety at Lighthouse Beach. This includes conducting regular patrols between September and April each year, providing rescue and emergency care services, and educating beachgoers about ocean conditions.

The club also plays an important role in the community in terms of health, fitness and social engagement. From the youngest nippers at just five years of age to their senior members who have devoted so much time to the club, they’re a place where people can go and volunteer, learn new skills, improve their fitness, develop camaraderie and connect with like-minded people.

Not just about saving lives

As well as providing essential lifesaving services for the community, Tacking Point SLSC also operates a recently renovated licensed bar on Fridays 4-8pm and Sundays 3-8pm, with the venue available to hire for functions and parties throughout the year.

Supporting our local surf clubs

Over the Summer holidays, you might have met some of The Westport Club team down at Port Central. During the busy season, our team were at the shopping centre chatting to locals and tourists, and we were also selling kites. All proceeds from the selling of the kites will be donated to Tacking Point and Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Clubs. The money raised will help the clubs to purchase much-needed new equipment to help them to continue to save lives in the water. In total, The Westport Club raised $2,400, which resulted in each Surf Club being donated $1,200. The donations will help the Clubs to purchase a surf ski and a rescue board.
